I would have tried my Leopard install DVD, but it is an upgrade disk, not an install disk. So, I got out the factory restore disks to install Mac OS X Tiger. This installer ran successfully, and the computer worked fine after the installation.

  1. Note, that to install the Lion or Mountain Lion, your Mac needs to be running Snow Leopard so you can install the newer OS on top of it. How to get macOS El Capitan download.   2. To install OS X Snow Leopard from the USB drive, you'll need to reformat the Mac's hard drive. To do this, look towards the top of the screen and click on Utilities from the top menu and then click Disk Utility from the drop-down menu.

Before attempting to install or upgrade Mac OS X, verify that yourcomputer meets the minimum system requirements. Then, continue yourinstallation or upgrade.

Install Snow Leopard while keeping files,applications, and settings

If you follow these steps, the installer will replace your operatingsystem if one is already present, but will preserve your accountinformation and personal files. You may have to reinstall someapplications, however.

  1. Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you havemore than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer whileholding down the c key. This causes yourcomputer to start up from the install disc rather than your harddrive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, releasec.
  2. The Mac OS X installer should open automatically. Follow theon-screen prompts to read and accept the license agreement and beginthe installation. When prompted to choose a destination disk, selectyour preferred location and click Install.
  3. When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restartyour computer. After the installation completes, a configurationprogram may begin automatically if you are installing for the firsttime. You will need to supply basic setup information for yourcomputer.
  4. Update your system software to ensure that you have the mostrecent operating system components. From the Apple menu, selectSoftware Update.., and then follow the instructions onthe screen. Often, you will have to restart your computer, and you mayhave to run Software Update multiple times before it can completelyupdate your system.

Install Snow Leopard while erasing everything onyour computer

If you follow these steps, everything that's currently on yourcomputer will be erased, and a new version of Snow Leopard installed.Make sure you've backed up your documents, music, pictures, movies,and other personal files before you proceed.

  1. Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you havemore than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer whileholding down the c key. This causes yourcomputer to start up from the install disc rather than your harddrive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, releasec.
  2. Choose your preferred language if prompted, and the Mac OS Xinstaller should open automatically. From the Utilities menu,select Disk Utility...
  3. In Disk Utility, click your hard disk in the left column, and thenclick the Erase tab. Next to 'Format:', make sure Mac OSExtended (Journaled) is selected, and then give your disk a namenext to 'Name:'. If you would like to securely erase your data, clickSecurity Options.., click your preferred option, andclick OK. When you're ready, click Erase..,and then Erase again to erase your disk. Once it'scompleted, quit Disk Utility to return to the installer.
  4. Back in the installer, click Continue, read and acceptthe license agreement, and begin the installation. When prompted tochoose a destination disk, select your preferred location, and theninstall.
  5. When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restartyour computer. After the installation completes, a configurationprogram may begin automatically if you are installing for the firsttime. You will need to supply basic setup information for yourcomputer.

Disk

If you're one of those people that continually adjust system settings, make changes in terminal, and try new and experimental software then you've probably done something in the past to your OS X installation that has compromised performance or made things stop working completely. On the other hand, you may have installed the latest updates to OS X and various programs just stopped working. If either of these sound like you, you may find it handy to have a back up OS X 10.5 Leopard install that you can boot to and make adjustments to your system.

Installing OS X Leopard on a USB Flash Drive is much easier than expected. In fact it is almost the exact same experience you had when installing the device on your Mac originally. For a complete install you'll need at least an 8gb Flash drive or a larger external USB Hard Drive.

To install OS X Leopard 10.5 follow these steps:

  1. Insert the OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD into your Mac
  2. Open system preferences, start up disks, and restart into the OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD
  3. Once your computer restarts into OS X Leopard, continue through the introduction and agreement pages that will be displayed until you get to the screen that asks you to select your installation Volume.
  4. You can't yet select your USB Flash drive, so select Utility from the menu bar and open Disk Utility
  5. In Disk Utility, select the USB Flash Drive and then Select Partition.
  6. From here select 1 Partition and then click Options
  7. Select GUID Partition Table so that our computer can boot from the device
  8. Name the Volume and click Apply.
  9. Close out Disk Utility and return to the Volume selection screen. Select your Volume and continue the OS X 10.5 Installation.
  10. If you're installing on an 8gb Flash Drive you'll need to be sure to customize the installation and remove any printer drivers, language and fonts, and anything else so you can reduce your install to fit on the device itself.

Now that you've installed OS X 10.5 on your Flash Drive, it should boot up to the device anytime you select it from System Preference >> Start up Disks.

From my experience running OS X 10.5 on a USB Flash Drive always runs a bit slow at first but performance increases significantly after 10 minutes or so.

If you don't have a large enough USB Drive, the SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive was what I used and worked perfectly as a Bootable OS X Leopard drive.
